Choosing a coach isn’t easy. Owner and Director at PlayTennis, Rhys McDougall, has dedicated his life to playing tennis, teaching tennis, promoting tennis and helping young professionals become both tennis players and coaches.

Rhys has all the credentials that a tennis coach ‘should’ have and a few others up his sleeve too. He is widely respected in tennis and is known particularly for his calm, positive manner. As testament to his excellence Rhys was awarded the Tennis West ‘Coaching Exellence’ Tennis Coach of the Year award, 2016/ 2017.

Rhys has a lifelong history of tennis credentials but here are just a few that are relevant to you:

  • Is qualified: Tennis Australia Coach & Lawn Tennis Association UK, Coach.
  • Is screened: He has undergone and maintains a national ‘working with children’ check.
  • Is insured: He holds public liability and professional indemnity insurance for protection.
  • Has over 30 years of continuous coaching experience in Australia, UK, France.
  • Has coached every age and ability:
    • from age 2 to 92
    • from never having held a racquet to a Davis Cup Player.
  • Has played tennis professionally.
  • Has represented Australia in the young senior’s team on 7 separate occasions.
  • Was team captain for the Australian young senior’s team.
  • Was a selector for Australian Young Seniors Teams for an allocated period of 3 years.
  • Is a family man; father of two girls (proven tolerance!).
  • Is known for his calm, patient manner.
  • Demands fair, honest, considerate sportsmanship from all students.

Rhys McDougall

Owner/Director & Head Coach

Rhys is a calm, good-natured and inspiring coach with a lifetime of experience. He can comfortably and expertly coach any age group effectively. He has 2 daughters, both of whom are learning to play tennis and has become even more knowledgeable in understanding children’s development.

He continues to play competitive tennis and is currently Captain of the Mount Lawley State League Team. He regularly represents Australia as an ITF Senior and has a highest world ranking at number 7.

Brandon Porcaro

Professional Coach

Brandon is very friendly and approachable. Brandon is a fully qualified having achieved his “Club Professional Coach” accreditation in 2018. Brandon has worked for Playtennis since 2014.

He currently plays regular Pennants Tennis.

Brandon is the Junior Development Coordinator at the Mount Lawley Tennis Club. He is extremely passionate about teaching and helping Juniors and his affable manner means he engages and gains trust with Juniors but he is equally qualified to teach all ages.

Evan Manso

Trainee Coach

Evan is a very friendly and approachable coach with an ability to engage children. He is suited to teaching all ages both Junior and Adults. His experience lies with coaching the younger juniors and also as a hitting partner with high performing athletes coached by PlayTennis.

Evan plays for the Mount Lawley State League Team. He is a regular Tournament player who has won numerous AMT Men’s Doubles events. He represented WA in the under 18’s state team event held in NSW where he received a bronze medal.

Evan graduated from Aquinas College in 2016 and is currently studying Commerce at Curtin University.

When not on the tennis court Evan also enjoys playing soccer.

PlayTennis is a family run business dedicated to providing excellent tennis tuition. We believe that tennis is about having fun, is inclusive, is accessible to everyone and is about playing the ‘game’ of tennis, not just learning to hit balls.

PlayTennis has a dedicated coaching program that is based at Mount Lawley Tennis Club in Perth, Western Australia. We also run tennis coaching programs at schools in Perth and run regular ‘Tennis Holidays’ within Australia and also internationally.

We coach every age and every ability, from pre-school children to ranked players, in a non-judgemental, fun, relaxed environment.
